Sending Warm Thoughts

It's been a while since I featured a Sunshine Designs image. Isn't this kid dressed up as a bear cute? I purchased it in October and planned to make holiday cards with it but neglected to do so. Oh well, no matter! I live in Toronto where it's pretty darn cold in wintertime (still no snow yet, if you can believe it) so I have plenty of opportunities to send someone warm wishes and brighten their day with this card. This simple design makes it easy to pop on a last-minute sentiment in pretty much any shape!

Pink Cat Studio Valentine Teaser

Did you happen to visit the Pink Cat Studio blog yesterday and see the teaser of images to be released on January 7, 2010? That's only nine days away! Melissa has been working very hard this holiday season on a lot of really fantastic Valentine's images and also paper piecing projects for those with digital cutters. Sneak peaks start on January 5th. You're going to be amazed!

Set of Hockey Cards

They're not collectors' cards but they could be. :P As I mentioned in yesterday's post, I had to make a set of four gender- and occasion-neutral hockey cards for my sister. I didn't have time to finish them while she was here over U.S. Thanksgiving so I'll be mailing these to her tomorrow. My sister wanted to have a bunch of special hockey cards to give to her hockey friends, male or female, for any occasion that comes to mind. These would be appropriate for celebratory events, like birthdays and congrats on the win, or many thanks for this and that. At first I thought it would be too hard to keep the colours gender-neutral but after I got started it wasn't that difficult. I made an all-American set and an earthy set. I hope she likes them!

I wasn't in the mood to use my chalks around the labels so I decided to make the images snowy. I also off set the images so I could tie an actual bow or ribbon to add more pizzazz to the card since there would be no sentiments. I briefly thought about creating a bunch of sentiments for each card which would allow my sister to mix and match and attach them using dimension squares but at the time it seemed like such a huge undertaking. Perhaps I'll do that for a future set. ;)

Hockey Birthday

A while back, my sister asked me if I had any hockey stamps. Being Canadian and the fact that my sister plays hockey, I think we were both a little appalled that I didn't have any hockey stamps. LOL I've always considered getting some but never actually did. I guess they weren't a priority but it was then that I realized I really should have at least one. So the search began and I briefly considered getting Hockey Riley until I found this one at the CreativFestival. I had good intentions of making holiday cards with it but never felt any inspiration from the image. When my sister ordered four gender- and occasion-neutral hockey cards I knew I had to get my thinking cap on.

I inked up this image for the first time as practice for my sister's set and made this card for a friend whose birthday is coming up. I'm sorry I can't tell you where the sentiment is from as it's more than a decade old and doesn't have a label on the side of it. I also used another one of my new nesties but it looks a little amateur since I didn't realize I needed a special embossing pad to emboss with my Epic Six. I ended up using some chalk to give the nestie a border. I also wasn't sure what to do with the ribbon but this was the first thing that came to mind. It's a bit frustrating to have tools that I've been coveting for so long only to hit a creative block when I finally have them. Sigh.

Happy Birthday, Grandma

I hope Christmas was as wonderful for you as it was for me and my family. Happy Boxing Day to those of you out there celebrating! I hope you find some good deals if you're planning on shopping but I'm not a fan of crowds so I'll be staying away from the shops today. ;)

Today I have a birthday card to show you. I used the Pink Cat Studio digital image Lily in her winter coat to make a birthday card for my mother-in-law whose birthday is coming up. In the past we've addressed her cards 'Mother' from her son, my hubby, but since she has a grandson now who can call her by name it's more fun to address the cards to 'Grandma'. As I hinted before the holidays, I knew I was getting nesties because they were on my wish list. These ones were from hubby and being my first time experimenting with them I think it looks okay. I wouldn't say it's the greatest as it looks slightly off kilter to me but perfectly fine for my first attempt!

Made For Me

As I posted on my birthday, I love receiving cards and especially handmade ones. I always say that the card means more than the gift itself which is essentially true because in most cases my friends and I have gotten away from exchanging gifts. Since it's Christmas Day I thought I'd share three sweet cards made for me and my family. Merry Christmas Everyone!

A Very Merry Christmas

This card for hubby is pretty much an all die cut card. We've been house hunting for over 10 months now and when we started in the spring we had hoped to be in a house for Christmas but alas we will have to wait. We came close once but lost in a bidding war. I sure hope there's more inventory on the market in the spring. When it's meant to be we'll be ready! So one of the things we want in a house is a squirrel-friendly tree. We have a soft spot for critters, our cat loves watching them and our son says 'gwirl' everytime he sees one. It's all very cute! So of course I designed this card with our Christmas wish in mind.

This card for my sweet boy features a dog! Ever since I cut out a bunch of these, he's been trying to climb up on the table to get at them. Yup, he's at that stage where I really have to watch him or he might have a terrible fall. A couple of times he's managed to get a hold of them and with a big smile on his face says 'wo-wo-wo' as he does whenever he sees any dog, real or not. I love those moments! I can't wait 'til he sees his card tomorrow.

We're going to have dinner at my parents' house tomorrow and I could've given them any of my leftover Christmas cards but I felt like making another one. They haven't put up a tree since I moved to San Diego in 2004 so I thought I would use some of my leftover trees from making these cards. It's also tradition that we don't exchange gifts because we don't really need anything but love. We just bring food to enjoy and exchange cards. I've made their cards ever since I was a little girl and so it continues. That's what makes them happy!

So Sorry for Your Loss

I needed to make a sympathy card for a friend whose grandfather passed away. I'm not comfortable making sympathy cards and the Verve set Forever in Our Hearts has the perfect phrases and images. It took longer than expected for my set to arrive in the post but I'm glad I finally have it. I kept this card very simple - no embellies, no stitching, no dimension. What I've never done before is to set my layers off to the side. I can't believe I've never done it before. I had a great urge to add ribbon or buttons, to get out the sewing machine and stitch something but I held back thinking that simple is best. Have a great day!

Customized Cards

Are you all ready for Christmas? I quickly wanted to show you how I customized two cards for my friend's nieces aged 3 and 6. I made these cards a while ago without the thought of having to add names so it took a little planning to find the right spot for the names. Finding a spot for Elise's name on the sugar plum fairy card wasn't too difficult but I thought I'd have to rearrange elements of the bunny princess card in order to fit the name. It's quite busy! In the end, I managed to find the perfect spot for Kira's name. I hope my friend makes his nieces' Christmas very special. :)

Customized Christmas

I hope everyone's had a wonderful weekend so far! They're much too short for me since there's always so much to do. I almost forgot I had to make this card for a friend who's here from Italy for the holidays. He had ordered customized cards for his nieces as well as his girlfriend and is picking them up tomorrow. I had already made the ballerina and princess cards for his nieces but I had to add their names to customize them. I was told the girlfriend likes pink and flowers and I picked up some pretty Valentine dps at the local scrapbooking place yesterday so I had the perfect dp for making this card.

Well, I had no idea what I was going to do until I remembered I had the SU ornament punch. I haven't used it much, except for these cards, so I thought I would do something more with it. After I figured out how many ornaments I was going to hang and positioned the words the way I thought looked best, I felt that the card was missing something. I added the beautiful text from PTI using a really pale pink which I think finishes the card nicely. If my sewing machine hadn't gone on a rampage the card would've been perfect? ;)

Gracious Note Set

I have another little gift set to show you today. This one features more of my 'lost in that old pile' dp. It's so pretty I don't know why I haven't used it much. I need to stop being a paper hoarder! I can't help it though. I love paper. These are simple and self-explanatory. I thought much like the 'Sending Smiles' collection these ones would be very useful for any occasion to say 'Thank You'. I wonder who will be the lucky person to receive these? ;)

Sending Smiles

Have you ever bought dp just because you thought it was cute thinking you'd be sure to find a use for it only to have it sit in your stash for a year or more? I'm guilty of doing that a lot! I was in the mood to make a set of random note cards so I came up with these. I wanted the cute animals and pretty mushrooms to shine through so I kept the cards very simple. I think I'll keep these around for last minute gift giving or to cheer up someone who needs a smile.

Another Betty Butterfly

I coloured this Betty the same time as yesterday's cards but I decided to pair her up with a different dp and ribbon. I haven't used this fun Lime Rickey dp in a very long time and I'm trying to get rid of some older dp. I thought this would make a very bright and happy card. Again I left off a sentiment so I could use it on any occasion but I could always add a sentiment on the inside, too. For some reason the spica glitter loves halogen lights which makes for awfully yellow photos but I wanted to show how pretty it looks close up. :)

Itty Bitty Butterflies

*GASP!* These aren't Christmas cards! LOL I'm so happy I finally got to use more of my new SU supplies. I ordered the rich razzleberry cardstock and ribbon because it goes so well with a lot of my favourite dps including the Basic Grey Indian Summer collection. I thought I would use this pretty ribbon to dress up another one of the Pink Cat Studio digital images I hadn't played with yet, Itty Bitty Betty as a butterfly. I hope you're not bored with me using PCS images but since the DTs are on hiatus 'til January I thought I would feature some that you haven't seen on this blog yet.

I really love making my cards open at the bottom as opposed to the traditional style and ever since I rounded the corners on this birthday card and this Halloween card, I've had to try very hard not to make all my cards like this. ;) I thought this was a pretty style to go along with the dp and the image. Tilting the image was an afterthought but I really like how it looks since Betty's eyes are actually aligned with the horizon and she's really on her tippy toe! I left off sentiments so I could use these cards for any occasion. I don't think you can see it too well in the photographs but I used my AtYou Spica glitter pen on the centre of the flower in Betty's hair, her headband, antennae, inside the wings, and on the beads around her waist.

Season's Greetings

Only 12 days 'til Christmas! Are you singing yet? :) I'm so excited about Christmas this year since my son is 16 months old now and understanding more about the whole holiday season and fascinated with the tree and ornaments. I can't wait 'til Christmas morning when he opens all his gifts! We're going to be environmentally friendly and not wrap anything. He'll just wake up and find everything around the tree. He really won't know what to play with first! Actually, I can't wait to play with his toys either. I feel like such a big kid! LOL

Today's card features another Pink Cat Studio digital image I hadn't worked with yet. Just like yesterday's image, this one is also available in the Itty Bitty Christmas rubber set. Here Itty Bitty Betty and Bobby are dressed as elves riding a candy cane supported by three strong gingerbread men. :P This one was easy peasy since the image could be on plain white paper and still look great! I picked out some colourful dp that highlighted the image, stamped a simple sentiment, popped the image on dimension squares and the card was done. I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Reindeer Ride

Oh, the cruelty of Christmas! I know there are nesties in my stocking but I can't use them 'til after Christmas. They're my first nesties ever and I can't wait to use them. Can you imagine how hard it is for me not to even sneak a use without the giver knowing? LOL At least you won't see all square and rectangular shapes on my cards in the New Year. :P

Anyway, I don't really need to make anymore Christmas cards but the images are too cute to pass up and there are a few I haven't made cards with yet so I'll keep making them as long as I feel festive. Lately I've been itching to make Valentine's and Mother's Day cards so you never know what you'll see here next! ;) This card uses unconventional Christmas colours and features the Pink Cat Studio digital image Reindeer Ride which is also available in the rubber set Itty Bitty Christmas. Melissa and the PCS DT are enjoying our holidays until the New Year when we'll be debuting a bunch of amazing Valentine's images. We can't wait to show them to you!!!

Festive Bikes

A friend who used to design bikes with hubby now designs for his own company. He asked me to make some Christmas cards featuring 'Toronto' and 'bikes' for his global clients. I had a good laugh when he asked if I could make 'non-cutesy' cards. I guess it was time I took a break from making cute cards and tried something more elegant and serious. LOL I asked a graphic artist friend to whip up a Toronto skyline for this project and of course I had the perfect bicycle image to go along with it. I kept the overall design the same for all three cards but varied the colour of the sentiment, metallic stitching and embossed bikes.

Lily's Christmas Surprise

My coworker ordered a traditional Christmas card for her mother. I let her choose the images and she liked Lily in her winter coat the best. Her mom has a dachshund and since you can only see the little elf dog's head and paws, it's good enough to be a dachshund. ;) I have the worst time trying to get blonde hair to look right so I went to Marianne Walker's blonde hair tutorial and voilà. I never would've tried to use the two colours she recommended but it looks great! My girls will no longer have neon yellow hair unless of course I want them to. LOL

Fairy Christmas Bunnies

Brrr! It suddenly got cold here. We were lucky to have such a mild November and it was Toronto's first snow-free November in 162 years! Isn't that crazy? We're expecting some flurries tomorrow and I'm excited because my little guy is old enough to appreciate snow this winter! Yesterday we got him some extra hats and mittens from our favourite outdoor store MEC. It's way too easy to spend money there. LOL

For a while now, I've wanted to make the entire Pink Cat Studio Fairy Friends set into Christmas cards but wasn't satisfied with the few ideas I had in my head. Finally when my sister brought me some new PTI stamps last week and the Brown guy delivered my new SU stuff on Friday, the lightbulb went off inside my head. I started off with the bunny because it's my favourite of the bunch. I was going to use a cord stitch where I used 'merry' as a string for the ornament. However, my sewing machine got moved because my toddler is now a daredevil climber and getting into everything. I was too lazy to get it down from the top shelf and that gave me the idea of breaking up the 'merry christmas' sentiment the way I did!

Winter Princesses

Who can resist a princess and her bunnies? Not me! :P Lily is super duper cute holding her bunny and if the two little ones in her pocket aren't enough, you have an even bigger bunny pretending to be a princess just like Lily complete with crown and a carrot scepter. I just love the tiny little paws! Don't you want to give them a tickle? LOL

I love all the details Melissa put into Lily as a winter princess. The image is perfect for colouring since you can't go wrong no matter what colours you choose and there are tons of opportunities to add embellishments! Of course crazy me had to cut out all these and make a set out of them. I went with two pink and blue Lilys and two more traditional Lilys in red and green. Normally I would say I love the red ones more than the pink ones but I'd have to say that I love all these equally and will have a hard time selling them!

Obviously one of these cards was from yesterday's release but I foolishly left it standing on the edge of the table within my toddler's grasp and down it went. Luckily only the sentiment was ruined or maybe my son has better design skills than me? LOL I decided it didn't look the best anyway so I created a new one on two lines which fits the oval much better. I also didn't like the scallop oval and replaced it with a foil snowflake which coordinates with Lily's crown and the hem of her gown.

Pink Cat Studio ~ Dec 3rd Digi Release!

Did you miss us last week? We missed creating for you! This week we have a bunch of super fun and, as always, tickle-me-cute images for the holidays. First up, the three little birds return to trim their cupcake for Christmas! Wherever they are, it's still warm and green but they're definitely in the holiday spirit. They've even painted their picket fence red. Teehee! I embossed the icing on the cupcake and added glitter glue to the sprinkles. Now there's a dilemma because we can't eat the cupcake if it serves as a base for their tree. LOL

Next up we have gorgeous Lily dressed as a winter princess. Isn't she stunning? I couldn't wait to work with this image and I almost died laughing when I saw the bunnies. LOL When my son saw the bunnies he kept saying, "Bu.. Bu... Bu..." because he has a stuffed bunny from Fabricawakuwaku which he just loves. I don't use pink often but I love seeing other crafters use it like I never could. Lately I've been challenging myself in the pink realm because I know little girls love pink and I've had a few orders for Christmas cards geered toward this age group. I used my Spica glitter pen on Lily's gloves to make them look satiny and embossed the collar and hem of Lily's cape with snowflake embossing tinsel. I just love that stuff and use it every chance I get. Can you tell? LOL I hope you like my pink and blue winter princess!

My sister was visiting from the U.S. over the long weekend and it was so much fun watching my son play with his cousin. I didn't have as much time to craft as I normally would've so I didn't get a chance to make cards with all the new images. Be sure to check out what the other talented DT ladies created and if you'd like to purchase any of today's new releases, click on the image below to head straight to the PCS Digi Store! :)
